Silver Week sees record numbers of Niseko tourists
Perfect blue sky weather, and Niseko is jam packed with Silver Week holiday visitors. Accommodation providers, restaurants and outdoor adventure companies are all reporting record numbers for September. The picturesque koyo season (changing colour of the leaves) to begin next month.
Silver Week is 5 day 'mega holiday' named after Golden Week in spring. It also has a clever double meaning: silver is a commonly used word in Japanese to describe the older generation, Respect For The Aged Day hence brings Silver Week.
Silver Week is relatively rare: 2015, 2026, 2032, 2037, 2043, 2049.
There's talk in Japan of moving the days to make it a permanent 5 day holiday. It's thought that this could boost the economy as Golden Week is considered a major economic stimulus. Niseko says yes!
